TED Talk

I love my privacy, just as much as immigrants to the country. What's the alternative to surveillance?

The number one working alternative to surveilling citizens and intruding on their privacy is to provide additional support for them, as this has been proven to work.

As Jordana Signer from Human Rights Watch states,"Instead of penalizing people who may have fled violence and other injustices, governments should protect their rights and provide them with critical services, such as legal assistance, mental health support, and housing."

Jordana Signer, Sandler Fellow in the Refugee and Migrant Rights Division at Human Rights Watch

What's wrong with detaining people based on their immigration status?

Holding people or adding programs to montior them is harmful to their mental health, feeling of safety, and is additionally ineffective and expensive for the government, and by proxy you, (or your family) as taxpayer(s)

Why should I even care? This doesn't affect me.

Firstly, All people, regardless of their origin, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. While it may be true that this doesn't affect you, some similar legislation may in the future. Once a nasty legal precident is set, it is abused to the fullest extent. (Take for example Jim Crow laws)

We can already see with issues like Women's Rights, that legislators are overstepping on our private lives, making personal decisions unavailable based on what aging and disconnected officials think.

Additionally, immigrants make up around 20% of our modern workforce, so there's that, too.

Together, we can restore the rights of immigrants.
